Facilitating online communities

I'm participating in an online course about facilitating online
communities. I learned of this opportunity through Wikieducator.org -
a wonderful organization endeavoring to make online teaching and
learning accessible to many more learners through development and
distribution of course content and training instructors and developers
to use the wiki format for this.

Much of online teaching is less about teaching and more about
developing learning experiences for an online community, then standing
aside to guide as necessary. Facilitation is what the
guide-on-the-side actually does once there are learners participating.

Having taught a number of online courses to undergrads, grad students
and faculty, I'm looking forward to participating in this course, with
peers from all over the globe and first rate instructors providing
exemplary practice in the art and science of facilitation.
